The Bank of Italy was only two years old when San Francisco was virtuallydestroyed in 1906 by a massive earthquake and subsequent fires. Bank founderA.P. Giannini helped rebuild the city by making loans to average citizens. Hewent on to transform his local enterprise into the Bank of America, for manyyears the largest bank in the world. He also introduced branch banking, individualsavings accounts, checking accounts, small loans and many other bankingservices for average Americans.
