Born in Venice of modest means, Barbara Strozzitook the Baroque music sceneby storm. A prolific composer as well as a gifted soprano, she published eightvolumes of music during her lifetime and had more secular music in print thanany other composer of the era. The majority of her pieces were solo cantatas,entertaining works for basso continuo and a single voice. Her output was soabundant, the 18th-century English writer Charles Burney credited her withinventing the form.
