Giuseppe Verdi’s life spanned the 19th century, and for many of his 87 years, hisgenius dominated opera. All told, he wrote 27 operas, including the mostperformed of all: “Aida.” He wasrenowned for his challenging soprano arias andbig choruses with patriotic themes. During his life, Italy was entering its 14thcentury of foreign interference or domination. Often censored as too political, hisoperas were anthems of the Risorgimento.
