Starting out in banking, Joseph Barbera switched to scriptwriting and animationwhen his illustrations were accepted for publication. He met William Hanna atMGM, collaborating with him on an animated short that launched the “Tom andJerry” series. They produced the series for 17 years, earning seven AcademyAwards for best (cartoon) short subject.
