Beginning in his teens with small sculptures, heprogressed to astonishing achievements: the sculpted Pietà (St. Peter’s) andDavid (Florence), the paintedceiling of the Sistine Chapel (Vatican), the sculptedtomb of Pope Julius II (S. Pietro in Vincoli) and the painted Last Judgment(Sistine Chapel). He later turned to architecture, creating the Laurentian Libraryin Florence and making major contributionsto the construction of St. Peter’s.
